MSNBC Receives Top Honor at Online Journalism Awards

November 2, 2010- The 2010 Online Journalism Awards were held Saturday and Msnbc.com took home the big prize of the night at the 11th annual awards show. The news website won for general excellence in online journalism, large site category.

Msnbc.com beat out other major competitors; NPR.org, New York Magazine and the New York Times.

Editor-in-chief, Jennifer Sizemore talked about the success Msnbc.com has had in reaching new audiences.

 “What really matters is how we reach our audience — through great stories no one else has, incredible visual storytelling, and the ability to deliver all that where and when people want and need it.”

Msnbc.com used a variety of content with their awards entry. The site features a stimulus tracker which monitors federal stimulus funding all the way to the county level, as well as a piece on the struggles of amputees living in Haiti after the earthquake.

The Online Journalism Awards were created in 2000,  and are handed out by the Online News Association along with the University of Miami School of Communication.

Msnbc.com is a partnership between NBC and Microsoft, however the company is separate from MSNBC, the television station.

According to their website, in 2006 Msnbc.com opened Newsvine, a community powered site for collaborative journalism. Newsvine offers a variety of news genres such as: Local news, world news, and politics.
